Schiphol Plaza Amsterdam
Creating a sheltered walkway for one of the busiest airports in Europe. The aim is to provide passengers with a covered walking area without obstructing access to entrances and exits.
Schiphol, one of the busiest airports in Europe, needed to create a “dry run” for passengers at the Schiphol Plaza arrival hall. The aim was to provide a covered walking area that protects passengers from the weather without obstructing access to the adjacent entrances and exits. This project placed high demands on the precision and speed of execution, given the enormous daily passenger flow and the complexity of the location.
The construction of the truss tent, which serves as a canopy at the entrance, was a technical feat, partly because it was built with only 50 cm of ground depth available above the underlying train tunnel. This limited the interventions in the ground due to the dense network of underground pipes. The entire structure, including the foundation, was installed by Polyned using horizontally adjustable foundation bars that lie across each tension point. This approach ensured that deconstruction could be carried out safely and without interrupting airport operations.
The dry run at Schiphol Plaza has effectively contributed to an improved passenger experience. How? By offering weather protection while keeping the flow of hundreds of thousands of daily passengers unhindered. The innovative construction techniques and the rapid installation without major disruptions have been particularly well received by the client and the users of the airport.
This project at Schiphol Plaza underlines our expertise in providing customized solutions for complex infrastructural challenges. The realization of this dry run has shown that effective and sustainable structures are possible even in limited spaces with many operational restrictions. This project highlights our capacity to think innovatively and overcome technical challenges while maintaining the functionality and aesthetics of the structure. Essential for a location like Schiphol.
Full in-house capabilities from start to finish
Our designer creates an initial sketch and provides an artistic rendering to deliver a clear visual solution for a realistic image. We also provide a cost estimate.
If you're pleased with the sketch and budget, we'll move on to the preliminary design phase, complete with final calculations, including design specifications, costs, and structural requirements.
Before we proceed with production, we finalize the construction details in a binding timetable.
Our next step is to execute the production and installation plan. Materials will be packed and delivered to the site, where our VCA-certified technicians will manage the installation.
Once the installation is complete, a handover with the project leader will take place, during which everything will be thoroughly checked. We also provide maintenance and service, customized to the project and in agreement with the client.
